The Abigail R. Cohen Preschool continues the practice of play-based learning into the pre-K years. Preschool combines an appropriate developmental program with an emphasis on learning through play, exploration, and self-discovery, while preparing the children for kindergarten. The combination of our exceptional child-to-adult ratio, active family involvement, and qualified and nurturing teaching team fosters the growth of the whole child in all areas of development.
Our classrooms provide a language-rich environment that promotes a love of words and a desire to read. Hands-on scientific experiments and observations of the real world encourage a greater comprehension of cause and effect, actions and consequences, which carries too into the social world. Children negotiate with their friends as they achieve growing self-awareness and an understanding of their place as an individual within a group.
With the help of parents, we take our children on field trips around the city. Sites include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Kimmel Center, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Sound All Around. We enjoy visits from the Philadelphia Zoo’s Zoo on Wheels and programs from Quiver Farms. The Preschool also walks to local parks, playgrounds, and neighborhood gardens throughout the year.
"We arrived from Israel in the middle of the year, with our daughter, who did not speak any English at that time. We found BZBI a perfect place, not only for our daughter but also for ourselves. The warm and professional staff of BZBI provided our daughter the best support and education. She immediately felt at home. Starting school in a new place is not easy, especially if the child does not speak the local language. However, we are sure that our daughter will remember her time in BZBI as a great experience." - Vivian Gat Terkel
